“The Philadelphia Story” - 8/4-10/25

Monday, August 4th

M and I trade off promoting a movie we'd like to watch, and I think M likes to make sure we both have watched the classics. I was aware of this movie, but I had never seen it, and what a cast! Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and James Stewart directed by George Cukor. This 1941 film revived KH‘s career, according to M. As well, it should, as it stars two of the most popular male actors of its time. It's really difficult for me to stay awake after lunch on Monday, so I rewatched it by myself on Tuesday. It's a movie based on a play, so it is very literate and engaging. A lot of fun, and I highly recommend it!

I had a Zoom meeting in the afternoon for my quarterly interdisciplinary meeting with everyone who takes care of me at the hospital. No big deal, except they did report that Dr. R had diagnosed me with depression. That did and didn't surprise me at the same time. That didn't surprise me because, of course, I am living in rather depressing surroundings, but I didn't think I was letting it get to me enough to be diagnosed that way. Very interesting

Tuesday, August 5th

I got my first massage since the end of June! It was nice to see R again, and she enjoyed my latest essay that I read to her. I thought I might try to get up in my chair, but it really didn't work out that way, so I stayed in bed. It really depends on what helper I have and how busy things are on the floor, whether I can get transferred to my chair. If I really need it to happen, it will, but if I could go either way, half the time I will stay in bed.

Wednesday, August 6th

B went on a trip with her daughter for a couple of weeks and J was still recovering from his illness, so no visits from them, although we did discuss what treat he would bring me next week! One key to my enjoying my life is having something to look forward to, and J&B do a wonderful job at providing that! (You can infer sushi and my sister are good too.)

Right before lunch, my HMSA coordinator stopped by to check in on me. When my CNA came by to bring me lunch, she was a little surprised that she was here because it was scheduled for 1:15 PM. Of course, I did not know any of this. I don't mind because I am always here, so it is no skin off my nose if she's early or late. I need to start a note about things to talk with my HMSA rep about.

Thursday, August 7th

I did get up in my chair so I could move to the small conference room, so I could have my therapy in private. I was excited that I actually had something to talk about since I wanted to discuss her depression diagnosis. And wouldn't you know it, I forgot that she had told me last week that she had a conference and would not be here this week. Mom came by for lunch, so she got to see the room. I said that I thought this would be a good place for Mom, M, and me to watch movies in private and not bother any of my neighbors.

Friday, August 8th

I give myself one black hole day a week, where if I forget what happened, that's OK. This, as you might suspect, is that day this week. Oh wait! I just remembered A came by to do hand exercises with me. I like working with her. Other than that, I watched BritBox on HBO all day.

Saturday, August 9th

My sister came by with sushi from Whole Foods, and we ate while watching the latest episodes of South Park. Wow! Talk about biting satire! I can just picture those two guys watching what has happened this year and saying to themselves, ‘We have to do a season and talk about what is going on.’ Do yourself a favor and watch it!

She helped me change my Facebook password so I could post to FB from my website, which had gotten screwed up. Then we called an old family friend from early Michigan days. She had sent me a sympathy card for Dad. My sister and I had a great conversation with her and had fun remembering old times. It made me want to talk to her son, who is my age, and see how he is doing.

Sunday, August 10th

Mom came by after church and gave me lunch. We played a couple of games of Connections, and then she needed to leave to check out an exhibit at the Art Academy. Between getting in touch with my friend from growing up, the reunion, and having the conversation yesterday, I have been thinking a lot about the past. I know I had some profound insight about that, but heck if I know what it is right now. I'm sure it will come back to me, but maybe not in time to make it into this week’s blog.

Speaking of the past, here is a photo from 1979 of me, my mom, and my sister probably at Ala Moana Beach Park right after we moved to Honolulu from Michigan. Talk about a change of scenery! If you ever wondered where I got my strong, independent streak, you're looking at her. (just to be painfully clear, I'm talking about my mom) Yay Mom! Have an excellent week!
