“Eyes Without A Face” - 9/15-21/25

Monday, September 15th

This morning, my doctor changed my catheter for the first time since last month’s disaster. I told him that I must have a small bladder, and it just doesn't take much to push the catheter into me. After almost three years, I finally had some credibility and rapport with the doctor. He changed it just as quickly as usual, but he did not push the new catheter in too far at all. I felt nothing! Yippee! I think we just started a new trend.

I had put on my Bugs Bunny T-shirt, and I looked through some of the best pictures I had of Humphrey. Since Thursday would be the first anniversary of his death, I wanted to take a new photo for the website. I would have Humphrey on the iPad and on my iPhone so he would be well represented. When M and Mom arrived, we arranged everything and took the shots. We got one good one, but that's all we needed. What movie should we watch?

I forget how the suggestion came up, but Mom threw out the 1955 French film Les Diaboliques. I didn't think I had seen the film, and Mom hadn't seen it since it came out, but unfortunately, it was not available to rent. (I feel somehow offended when I find something that is not readily available on the Internet.) Instead, M suggested this film and said it was widely regarded as one of the first and most influential horror movies of all time. I love the French title Les Yeux Sans Visage.

It is definitely creepy and disconcerting to watch someone remove the skin from someone's face and then later throw away the rest of the person. The most effective character in the film is the doctor’s assistant who, despite being a woman, does all of the doctor’s dirty work, including disposing of a body in the river. I was glad to see him pay for his nastiness in the end. After we paid to rent it, I found out it was available on HBO Max. Oh well.

Tuesday, September 16th

After my busy day yesterday, I spent all of today writing last week’s blog. Yikes! That's all I did today!

Wednesday, September 17th

Mom came by and gave me lunch, as J&B would not be able to come today. She brought Korean barbecue from Diamond Head Grill! Oh, how I love outside food! She gave it to me as we watched the first episode of The Pitt. I'm looking forward to rewatching the first season with Mom. After that, we worked on a few puzzles on my iPad. A very good day overall.

Thursday, September 18th

I forgot to mention last week that I got a new roommate. She is an older lady in her late 80s who only speaks her native Vietnamese. She has six children, and five of them visited her throughout the day and fed her. It was really nice to see them rally around their mom, who was obviously not going to be around much longer. She was moved to another room today so that the family could have some privacy and not bother the other residents when they gather together. I will miss her and her family.

Dr R and Freddie came at their usual time. Dr. R drops him off beside my bed an hour before our appointment begins. That's so he can be near me and get used to being in my space. He still doesn't like to get out of the stroller much, but that's OK. I've never needed a cat to pay attention to me when he doesn't want to. That way, I know he wants to be near me when he is.

Friday, September 19th

A didn't show up this morning because she had an event she was planning that happens tomorrow, and it took up all her time today. I wasn't worried, and I spent the day watching different things.

Saturday, September 20th

My sister went to the event A organized, so I spent time finishing the latest essay I was working on. I also just had another relaxing day doing not much of anything, but missing the sushi I would have had, but we have tomorrow.

Sunday, September 21st

I thought I would get both Mom and my sister today, but Mom never showed up. When my sister finally came, it was 2 PM, so I had to have lunch from the hospital. I really don't want to have sushi this last minute, but sometimes you have to take what you get. I had half of the dragon veggie roll for dinner and saved the other half and the California shrimp roll for tomorrow.

I had an appointment scheduled yesterday around dinner time that I completely missed because I forgot about it, and I didn't hear the text from my nutritionist when she tried to get a hold of me. I really don't like missing an appointment with her, so I wanted to get a clear, loud text notification sound that I couldn't miss. My sister helped me find a They Might Be Giants song for my ringtone, "Birdhouse In My Soul." We found an acceptable sound on a free app, but it was really complicated to download, so that got left for another day.

The cover picture for this week’s blog is from July of 2024! Early on, the hospital recreational therapy people gave me a very cute Japanese grey stuffed cat that I hang from my trapeze so I can see it all the time. It was hanging in such a way that when I raised my bed, I bumped into it and got this picture. I meant to use the photograph, but I haven’t until now! Have a fabulous week!
