“Scarface”/“The Most Dangerous Game” - 11/3-9/25

Monday, November 3rd

Since it was the beginning of November, M & I looked through the new movies on Criterion. I was very curious to watch some movies by Werner Herzog, a German filmmaker who I had heard a lot about over the years. What we ended up watching was the original 1932 Scarface starring Paul Muni, directed by Howard Hawks. The movie code had just been adopted in 1930, but it was not enforced until 1934, most likely because of movies like this. It was not gory by today‘s standards, but there is definitely a high body count. It's a good movie.

Then, because we had almost an hour when the movie was finished and I had started a movie that was only an hour long, we watched most of the 1932 movie The Most Dangerous Game. This film was directed by Ernest Schoedsack and Irving Pichel and stars Joel McCrea and Fay Wray of King Kong fame(although this movie was made one year before King Kong came out). I find it interesting to see the very early versions of movies that will become much more graphic as time goes on.

Tuesday, November 4th

The biggest thing I did today was deal with a doctor's appointment that I forgot I had tomorrow. When the office called me to confirm what time I would show up, I was surprised because I thought the appointment was at 3 PM, when it was really an hour earlier. They asked if I wanted to change the appointment to Telehealth, and I said yes, please! Phew! I'm really glad the pandemic made remote appointments easy. It really shows how, when you accommodate the disabled, things get easier for everyone.

Wednesday, November 5th

Something was up with the pipes still, and the shower room was not available, so I didn't get a shower! I was very glad my appointment had been canceled and I could stay in bed. Mom came by for lunch and stayed for the appointment, which was good and thorough. We covered a lot of stuff, the biggest one being my need for speech therapy to help me regain the volume I've lost in my voice.

Because of the doctor's appointment, J rescheduled his lunch plans with me, so no Thai food today. Because of that, I asked Mom to bring lunch from Diamondhead Grill. I tried the miso ginger salmon salad. It came with brown rice, three nice-sized pieces of salmon, and salad. I ate one piece of salmon with brown rice and the salad, and had two dinners of salmon with brown rice left over. Wonderful! I love how they do fish here, except salmon. Way too overcooked.

Thursday, November 6th

Freddie, who had avoided coming here last week, showed up today. My neighbor, whose bed creaked a lot and frightened Freddie, was having a colonoscopy today, so was not here! Dr. R put him on my bed, and he was fine for the whole five minutes he wanted to be out of his stroller. Oh well, we tried.

That night, I'm not sure what I did, but I could not fall asleep. That is not entirely unusual for me, so I just listened to a lot of podcasts and drank water. Hopefully, I will be able to get to sleep better tomorrow night.

Friday, November 7th

I did get to sleep last night, but not until about 1:30, so not enough sleep. I deliberately had a quiet day of watching four Werner Herzog films. Very interesting.

Saturday, November 8th

I thought I was ready, so I turned my sights on Grizzly Man, the WH film M had warned me about. It's a very intense film, definitely not for the faint of heart, but I thought it was very well done. It's a found footage film about Timothy Treadwell, a real person who lived for thirteen summers among grizzly bears. He put himself in real danger and paid for it with his life. There is a big difference between wild animals who know you and those who don‘t.

My stepbrother and his wife visited in the afternoon and brought me shrimp pad Thai. We had a nice time chatting. Anyway, I finally got eight hours of solid sleep last night! Fingers crossed for two nights in a row.

Sunday, November 9th

My sister stopped by and didn't bring sushi since I had a lot of outside food already. She showed me the t-shirt she had gotten for me at the Detroit Airport. It was a red t-shirt that said Detroit Michigan, with a picture of the shape of the state. Kind of plain, and I wish I had told her not to bother if it wasn’t an interesting design. Oh well, it is a nice color red, and I like the collar.

She put glow-in-the-dark tape on my WATER sign so it would show up with the lights out. As it turns out, the ambient light in the room is not enough to activate the glow-in-the-dark tape on the sign. Poop! What are you gonna do?

I put off writing my blog until Tuesday this week. That is pushing it too far in my book. My goal is to start writing the blog on Friday or Saturday this week. We'll see…

The cover picture is an okay photo of me in my Las Vegas t-shirt my sister got me. The last time I visited that city was in the 80s when I was in college, but I do like the shirt. I hope everyone has a fabulous week!
