“My Bodyguard” - 12/15-21/25

Monday, December 15th

As part of my morning routine, I listen to NPR‘s Up First to catch up on the day's news. The top stories today, as you probably know, were about the shootings in Australia, Providence, and that Rob Reiner had been killed. I got very empathetic and started weeping for the loss of so many people. And then I had to eat breakfast and get on with my day.

Mom, M, and I were at a loss for what movie to watch. M had brought his iPad, which I knew had some movies on it. He had Harold and Maude on it, which I was up for, and Mom said she liked Ruth Gordon, so M looked up RG comedies and came up with this 1980 film. It was an early film for many actors who later achieved greater fame, including Adam Baldwin, Matt Dillon, Martin Mull, Joan Cusack, and several other character actors whose names I don’t recall. It's a decent film, but H&M would have been a better movie.

Tuesday, December 16th

I had a lot of trouble getting to sleep last night, so I was tired this morning. The neighbor behind me cannot walk and is not in her right mind, so I hear interesting things going on behind me. Almost once a day, a nurse or CNA will ask her, ‘Where are you going, V?’ There's usually someone she has to meet. No, there's just go back to bed. It might get sad if it weren’t so repetitive.

At about 9:30, who would show up out of the blue but Father C from my church! I feel a slight twang when I say that because I still feel very much like my church is on Maui. But Father C has definitely embraced me, as have others at the church. I have yet to visit or meet anyone in person, so I haven’t taken full ownership yet. He was out and thought he would drop in and say hi! He told me that he and Brett had made an announcement and told people to leave me a message on my website. That's very sweet, but nobody knows me, so I'm not holding my breath.

Mom, my sister, and my aunt came to visit for dinner. They brought Diamond Head Grill, and I ordered the miso salmon plate. Yummy! I will definitely have leftovers. My aunt was going to Maui for Christmas, so she wanted to see me before she left. Because I had slept so badly the night before, I was not in a good mood, but I did not want to take anything out on them so I just kept my mouth shut. When I'm tired and in a bad mood, I feel really horrible about living here, and there‘s not a lot that can make me feel better. I knew I would feel better tomorrow so I just waited.

Wednesday, December 17th

I slept well last night, and I felt much better today. I was glad I hadn’t said anything except to my sister when we were alone. I knew she would understand. Not that Mom and my aunt wouldn't, but I didn’t want to ruin the Christmas spirit. When I woke up, my iPad had died, which was mildly irritating. When I get the charging cord plugged in, it charges pretty fast, but still, it should be plugged in all night. I'm getting lax in my old age.

J came at lunch and brought two, count ‘em, two orders of spring rolls from my new favorite Thai restaurant. That was his Christmas present to me. And I already had leftovers in the fridge! One order had five rolls in it, and I ate three for lunch. They were nice and crispy and delicious! I had the other two for dinner. Still tasty!

Thursday, December 18th

No Dr. R or Freddie, because she was on vacation for Christmas with family. When I woke up, I had some salmon and rice leftovers for breakfast. The salmon was so good, and there was enough for another breakfast! I worked on my finances during the day and then had two spring rolls for dinner. Lunches are pretty good, so I'm saving outside food for dinner, and I'll have the other three tomorrow night!m

Friday, December 19th

Another yummy breakfast of salmon and rice! Mom came in the afternoon, and we called the Apple Store and spent about half an hour ordering my Christmas present: a new iPad! I know, I know, my current iPad is only two years old, but I use it really hard, and it has been getting glitchy. I am VERY LUCKY to have a mom generous enough to give me such a wonderful present! We are having it delivered to Mom by Tuesday so she can wrap it up for me! I can't wait! I had the last three spring rolls for dinner. Yummy!

Saturday, December 20th

My sister visited with sushi from Whole Foods. Yummers! We watched Grizzly Man while it was still available on Criterion. My sister hadn’t seen it, and I was interested in watching it. I really liked the film, so I wanted to see it again. I cry at the end of it every time! We put up some Christmas cards and chatted.

The advantage of eating sushi without any raw fish is that it will keep overnight without worrying about eating it the next day. That way, I can stretch two orders of sushi into four meals. It helps that I also don't have a big appetite, so four pieces of sushi is a decent meal for me.

Sunday, December 21st

Mom stepped by after church but couldn’t stay long as she had a lunch to go to. That was fine with me. I had sushi for lunch and dinner from yesterday. I love sushi for breakfast, but I like the breakfast I get here, so I saved the sushi for lunch and dinner. I'm not good about checking my email, but I happened to do that today and saw a message from Apple that my order had been canceled!

It was too late in the day to talk to anyone, so I called in the morning, and they couldn’t tell me why it had been canceled. I would see Mom tomorrow, and we could re-order everything then. I called Mom Monday morning, and she had gotten a call and re-ordered everything already. Apparently, there had been a one-cent discrepancy between the order total and what the credit card had been charged. ARGH! Anyway, it's coming...

The cover photo for this week actually happened on Monday of the next week. You're seeing the future a week early, but I knew there would be pictures from Christmas Eve and Christmas for next week, and this was such a nice picture, I wanted to use it right away! The woman standing next to me visits me every week, and she has a nonprofit organization that brings children to old people, and the man kneeling next to me directed the show. It was great, and you will hear all about it next week! Have a fabulous week!
