M’s mom was still recovering from being sick, and my Mom was being good about not letting me be exposed to anything, so M did not join us today. Every month, Criterion interviews a director and asks them to talk about a number of movies that influenced them. After the 15-minute interview, they show the movie from the Criterion Collection. It's a nice opportunity to see a movie without it being part of a collection. This month, Noah Bambach was interviewed, and this movie was one of his selections.
He had talked about two different comedies, and I played both interviews to Mom, and she wanted to watch this movie. It is a screwball comedy by French director Jacques Tati from 1953. Good slapstick transcends language, which this movie did brilliantly. She did, however, think it was a bit repetitive after a while and did some chores before the end of it. This movie is also the reason one subscribes to this channel because without the restoration, this film would not exist anymore. I was glad to have watched it.

I knew Mom was bringing in a new massage therapist today, and I had not been up in my chair for a while, so I got up. It is also easier to massage me when I'm in my wheelchair since you don't have to deal with the whole bed. Everyone showed up at 2 PM, and I had a good time meeting D. I liked that she was very open to nontraditional ways of doing things. And she loved cats. I thought she would be a good second massage person, so we would not be using only one person.

J was still not feeling well, but said that he would be better next week and could visit then. Mom called and was down, so she did not show up either. Fine with me! Someone always seems to be stopping by lately, so I relish a day to myself. I was thinking about finishing my financials or writing an essay, but in the end, I just had a day for myself.
Thursday, January 8th
Dr. R was back in town! She and Freddie came by at 11:15, and I was happy to see both of them! Dr. R brought me back a postcard from the country she visited because their postal service is so bad that it probably would not have made it back that way. Yikes! The USPS is far from perfect, but I would say it's fairly reliable.
We had to get Freddie reacquainted with me since he had been on vacation for two weeks. He actually did pretty well at staying on the bed and even lay down on my legs for a bit. (Gosh darn it, do I love the feeling of a cat lying on me! More of that, please!) Mom showed up for lunch before they left, and she got to say hello to Freddie, which she enjoyed. (Humphrey gets all the credit for turning her into a cat lover. Or maybe a cat appreciator, I should say.)
Friday, November 9th
A came by for a bit and worked on my hand. Mom doesn't usually come two days in a row, so after she left, I knew I was alone for the rest of the day. I had my spreadsheet for my actual expenses set up in Google Sheets, and I had one sheet for each month. I had about 15 different categories of expenses and put each item in its category. I could see how much I spent each month. What I didn't know was how to add up the same cell from different sheets so I could see the totals for the year.
(I know this kind of scintillating spreadsheet talk is just why you read this blog, so I will continue.) I finally went to the Internet and asked the question to it. AI mode came up and I said sure, why not? The next thing you know, I was staring at a page that told me the syntax to write the formula for what I wanted to do! Sweet! I wrote the formula and it worked! I love it when you get something done exactly the way you wanted.

There was a last-minute protest at the capital today that Mom and my sister went to, and then they came to me. My sister showed up first, and I showed her the formula to add up all the months. I needed help copying it, which my sister did, and now I was excited to finish filling everything in so I could see the totals.
Then Mom showed up and both of them cleaned out the drawers of my bedside cabinet. They only found one roach in the Wi-Fi appliance I had. (Insects do love warm electronics. I guess that‘s the price of technology…) So I'm starting the year with clean drawers. Perfect! Some of that stuff was three years old.
Sunday, January 11th
Mom came by for lunch after church, and then we watched the first episode of season two of The Pitt on HBO Max. It's nice that we have a show we can watch together. They do not hold any punches when showing the graphic nature of injuries or impromptu surgeries. Luckily, I do not seem to have a problem with that. I remember when I had my brain surgery, I would have been curious to watch it if I could.
The cover photo for this week is my mom and sister at the protest at the capital. I know it gets tiring to have to keep resisting like this, but it will keep us from going full-on fascist. If I could be out there with you all, I would! Keep it up! Enjoy your week!
