"Taxi Driver” - 1/26-2/1/26

Monday, January 26th

I had decided that Mom should be the first one to pick movies. I'm not sure why, but she didn’t run her choices past M as they were driving to me. Her three choices were the original The Stepford Wives, Taxi Driver, and The Day of the Locust. That selection from a woman who loves to laugh! M and I dismissed TDOTL as it was just too depressing. I thought we were about to dismiss TD, but M said that he thought it was one of the most violent movies he's ever seen. What? That is not how I would describe that movie.

He was sounding a little bit like he wanted to protect Mom from watching the movie, and that got Mom's and my hackles up a little bit. I said Mom's a big girl and can handle the movie. She wanted to watch it since it‘s considered such a good movie, and she had never seen it. So we watched it, and it has pockets of extreme violence amongst long stretches of moody, dreamy atmospheric sequences. As M had predicted, Mom did not like the movie, but now she could say she had seen it. I told Mom to run her choices past M before they got to me.

Tuesday, January 27th

I knew it was good for me, and I wanted to give D the opportunity to massage me in my wheelchair, so I got up after lunch. The other nice thing was that we were alone in the small dining room. That meant we could play music loud, and I had just signed up for the three-month free trial of Apple Music. I had really wanted to listen to ABBA Gold, which I hadn't heard for years.

It's a great album, and ABBA is a band that I have yet to meet someone who doesn't like. The songs are all from the 70s, but they are like the Beatles; they are evergreen. D enjoyed them as well, so we had a fun time blasting the music. (When I first entered the dining room, there was someone watching TV loudly. That's common because a lot of people don't hear well. Then the CNA came in and took her out of the room without turning off the TV. I was trying to write voice-to-text, and the TV was louder than me! D eventually showed up and shut it down, but I need to make sure they turn it off if they are removing the person watching the TV.

Wednesday, January 28th

J/B walks with Mom almost every morning and can coordinate with me then. So she knew J was not going to be able to visit me that day. When she told me that, I asked her to get an order of the miso salmon plate from Diamond Head Grill when she came for lunch. Yum! She also brought me a treat from J: a 1-pound box of salt water taffy from Delaware! When I had lived on Maui, my good friend had brought some back from the East Coast, and I had gotten hooked! Best of all, Mom and my sister both weren't crazy for it, so I didn’t have to share! I had a very good lunch and dessert!

Thursday, January 29th

Now that we knew what he liked, when Dr R and Freddie showed up, we immediately arranged the blanket around the stand and used a safety pin to secure it. Then she let Freddie out of the stroller, and he just looked at it. She picked him up, and he then dove to get under the tent. He was completely content to sit on my legs the whole hour Dr R was with me. Heaven!

When the hour was over, we destroyed the tent, and Freddie was left exposed, but he remained on the bed. He really liked the tent because he tried to burrow under the blanket that was now just flat on the bed. I’ll be curious to see how he reacts this week. Yay! Quality time with a cat!

Friday, January 30th

I thought Mom might stop by, but she did not, and A didn't either, so I had a surprise day all to myself! Wonderful! I just watched stuff and had a lazy day.

Saturday, January 31st

I actually wanted something other than sushi for lunch! Can you imagine that? Of course, the other lunch item that occurred to me was something I had before, but not for a while. I got a gluten-free pepperoni pizza from California Pizza Kitchen with a spinach/artichoke dip, and I wanted to get a piece of their Key Lime pie, but they were out. My sister went to Whole Foods and got me gluten-free vanilla cupcakes. A worthy substitute, I thought.

When she got here, we started Seven Dials on Netflix while we ate. We got halfway through the second episode before I realized I wanted to get some stuff done. We moved around the categories list for this year’s expenses spreadsheet and then made a sheet for each month of the year and filled in the basic equations we knew we needed. She also helped me fill in the credit card charges for January. Yippee!

Sunday, February 1st

Mom came by for lunch, and we watched another episode of The Pitt. Played some games and talked. The usual. Ho hum. Just another Sunday in a long-term care facility in paradise. I thought about starting my blog, but I easily procrastinated and turned to Netflix.

I didn't have a photo handy for the blog. I thought about it and came up with a slogan I could write on a piece of paper and get a picture of me holding it. (I love Hawaii, almost NO ICE!) I told M my idea, but he didn’t think it was a good idea. Mom thought I should ask my sister. She thought about it and thought the risk was small enough, and the need to push back against authoritarianism was more urgent. So, because I can‘t protest directly, this is my show of support for everyone in Minnesota! Have a fabulous week and stay safe!
