“Mahogany” - 6/1-7/26

Monday, June 1st

It was Mom's turn to choose the movie, and she was working her way through the list of films from 1975 she wanted to watch. She gave us the choice between The Stepford Wives, Dog Day Afternoon, or this. I had rewatched DDA fairly recently, so I voted for TSW, but somehow we ended up watching this movie.

This 1975 film, directed by Berry Gordy, stars Diana Ross, Billy Dee Williams, and Anthony Perkins as a very creepy photographer who would rather get the picture than save his own life. Diana and Billy are both gorgeous, but they cannot save the film from drowning in its mediocrity. We all agreed it wasn't very good. Oh well.

Tuesday, June 2nd

I forced myself to get up in my chair so that I could go downstairs for Social Dining. There was work happening on the first floor, and this was the last time for a while that the group would get together on the first floor. Since I was in my chair, they brought me downstairs for the May/June birthday celebration. Since I stay in my room so much, I didn't know most of the people who were there. They put me next to the one person I did know.

They knew I would not eat cake, so they offered me a sugar-free chocolate pudding cup. Pudding is probably the only food I can safely eat by myself, and I was interested to see how well I could manage it. It took a few minutes for me to figure out how I could best hold the spoon so I could dip it in the pudding cup and then bring it to my mouth. I ate 3/4 of the cup all by myself! Then the birthday celebration was over, and people went back to their floors.

The director of Recreational Therapy, S, was putting the room back together while the residents were leaving, except one resident, who really liked S, was holding his hand and begging him not to leave her. As I was sitting just a yard in front of him, I told him to bring her to me, and I could look after her, which is what he did. He faced her away from the main area of the room. Because I have such a good smile and I am very genuine, I could reassure her that he was close by and she would see him again soon.

I felt very useful, but I knew I didn't want to get up for every activity, so I could be the official distractor for the needy residents. I didn't want to be that useful. I went on to Social Dining, and I got G’s phone number so we can call each other directly. We are both alert residents with MS, so we have a lot we can talk about.

I stayed in my chair for my massage, and because she had such good access to me, D2 spent 30 minutes working out the knots in my neck! In bed, there is better access to my legs, but in the chair, you can get to my neck easily. It was the kind of massage that almost hurts a bit while she's doing it, but once it's done! Nice! I hope it stays this loose for a while.

Wednesday, June 3rd

Yesterday was a busy day! The rest of the week, not so much. My mom was dealing with some new health issues and so would not be able to visit the rest of the week. My nails grew, and I watched a lot of movies. Of course, it was my turn to choose a movie for Monday, so I was previewing them.

Thursday, June 4th

I wasn't 100% sure that Dr R would show up today because I couldn’t remember exactly when she had left for vacation. But right on time, she and the stroller came into view, and I gave her a little yay! She gave me the postcard she brought back for my wall, and we set up the tent for Freddie. He didn't want to jump onto the bed, but he was fine once she put him there. It was very nice to see my kitty buddy again!

Friday, June 5th

One of the new collections on Criterion this month was the very first three James Bond movies. I was curious to see Sean Connery in peak sex symbol form. I found the movies surprisingly slow and rather dated. I guess I'm used to the fast-paced action movies of today. It was fun to watch as a piece of history, but I would not be watching them on Monday.

Saturday, June 6th

I was hoping my sister would show up today, but she was feeling like she was coming down with something and didn't want to give it to me. Poop! I was really looking forward to seeing her and getting some outside food. Fortunately, my stepbrother called and said he and his wife would stop by later with pad Thai! Perfect timing!

Sunday, June 7th

I did start writing my blog, so good for me. Nothing much else happened today. As I said, it was a very quiet, uneventful week. At the end of the day, when I was getting ready for bed, or rather, when my CNA was getting me ready for bed, I had her take a picture of me all bundled up. It never fails to amaze me that, despite the fact I live in paradise, it looks like I'm bundled up for winter when I go to bed.

What I didn’t realize was that you can't see my unmoving right hand strapped in its splint. It's under the striped scarf. After my regular CNA took the picture, one of the other CNAs came in and took a selfie with both of us. It came out so cute, I'm using that as this week's cover photo, and the photo of me all bundled up is at the end. Have a super week!
