“Cape Fear” - 8/10-16/26

Monday, August 10th

I had been looking closely for a good funny movie and couldn't think of one at the top of my head that we hadn't seen already. I thought of three OK funny movies, and then I looked at Criterion. One of the latest collections was called Southern Gothic, and there were a couple of older movies that intrigued me. I had heard of the movies Inherit the Wind and The Long, Hot Summer, and the descriptions interested me.

M was spending the day at Mom‘s painting, so he was not here. That made the choice a little easier. Mom was not interested in the older movies, but she was interested in the 1991 Martin Scorsese remake of Cape Fear. (She'll watch almost anything we pick, but I think she prefers a newer movie.) I had completely forgotten that, along with Robert De Niro, the movie stars Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange as the parents and Juliette Lewis as their daughter.

I think it's one of those rare examples of the remake being better than the original. Of course, MS had a lot more leeway to be explicitly violent. And Robert De Niro does his absolute best to be as intimidating, creepy, and malevolent as possible. It is an unsettling film. You have been warned.

Tuesday, August 11th

F, the head nurse for the floor, came into my room to talk to me about something, and she wasn't wearing a mask! I had entered the facility a year or so into Covid, and I only recognized people when they were wearing a mask. My brain had filled in what I imagined their face looked like, and somehow I had gotten it wrong! The nerve of people to not look like what I imagined!

When she came in the room later that day with her mask on, I joked that someone had impersonated her this morning. Then we laughed! They got me in my chair, and we had a meeting with Gammie about fitting me for a new wheelchair. Insurance will pay for a new chair every five years, and I had had this chair for seven years. I can't do what I did seven years ago, so I need a chair that works for me today.

The rest of the day went fine with D1 giving me a massage in my chair, so she got my neck well. Later in the day, my urethra started hurting again like it does every few months. It always takes me a couple hours before I remember that there is a little red pill I can take and the pain goes away. Peridium is a great medicine!

Wednesday, August 12th

The big event today was a telehealth visit with my neurologist. I always forget if there is a specific reason, and then I remember it is my regular check-in with the doctor every 6 months. It was a good visit, and we talked about everything going on with me. I told her I wanted to get a little bit higher dose of the Botox in my hand, and she made a note to send that doctor a message. I really like doing this check-in over the phone rather than in person.

My evening CNA wasn't wearing a mask, and I figured I would be getting to know all my CNA’s and nurses now that they didn't have to cover their faces. Some people still wore the mask, but that could have been because they were just working on someone who required a mask.

The podiatrist came by after dinner, and I was happy to see her. My left big toe had been hurting a little bit, as it was red and a little swollen. (I don‘t miss looking at my feet, but I am glad other people do.) Turns out, I had an ingrown toenail. Ugh! She worked on that and removed the ingrown part, which, when she was done, felt much better.

Thursday, August 13th

I thought Dr. R and Freddie would be back today, but they were not here. I guess I will see them next week. Not much else going on today. I forgot to take my stool softener, but everything came out OK. (I know you don't need an update on that, but I wanted to make a note of it for myself. Sorry.)

Friday, August 14th

Mom stopped by after lunch. She just wants to hang out with me and she always says, watch whatever you want! After seeing a few documentaries about SNL, I was curious to watch the first five seasons and see the evolution of the show from the beginning. I watched SNL when it first aired! I was only nine years old, but somehow I had the good taste to recognize its brilliance.

Unfortunately for Mom, the show did not get rolling until episode 4 or 5, and I had to have her watch episodes 2 and 3 with me. They were really mediocre, and I should have stopped and watched something else with her. Oh well. Sorry, Mom.

Saturday, August 15th

My sister came by after yoga with two packages of sushi and two salads. We watched one episode of Cape Fear that I had not seen, which surprised me because I thought I had finished the season. Apparently not. I really like the show, so fine with me!

After that, I asked my sister if we could look for a dress I could wear to my birthday party. My new favorite way to find clothes is to go on Thredup, the online secondhand outlet. They photograph everything and give a detailed description of it. I look at the floor-length maxi dresses and make sure it has spandex so they will stretch. We skimmed through eight pages and finally ended up with four dresses that totaled $78! Fabulous! I love having new things to wear!

Sunday, August 16th

Mom was working with M again on painting her condo, so she did not stop by. I did not start writing my blog, but I did watch more of the TV show Dark Matter on Apple TV, which I was very much enjoying.

The cover photo this week is a picture of me with T from Gammie and K from Adaptive Solutions Hawaii after they evaluated me for my new power wheelchair. It's basically the latest model of the chair I have now. When I got my chair seven years ago, the seat elevation was not covered, so I paid for it myself. Now, it is, so I get it again for free! Have a great week!
