“Kind Hearts and Cornets” - 8/3-9/26

Monday, August 3rd

I was hoping that M would be back from vacation, but sadly, no, she wasn't. I did not get in my chair, so we watched the movie bedside. Mom was recycling her movie choices as How To Make a Killing showed up again. M mentioned that that movie was a remake of this movie, so we decided to watch the original version.

This movie was made in 1949, directed by John Hamer, and stars James Price and Alec Guinness in eight different roles, which made him an international star. The remake is showing on HBO Max and stars Glenn Powell in the James Price role. After Monty Python, one person playing more than one character is not a new thing anymore.

It's a solid movie that made me realize how much movies are just people standing around talking. That's why the script is so important. Today, a lot of movies get away with flashy locations and stunts, and there's not much to the actual film. (Do I think I'm having some amazing revelation?)

Tuesday, August 4th

Yay! (A triumphant chorus of ‘Hallelujah’ plays) M is back!! Once again, all is right with the world. At least for today.

I had a good massage with D2 and I finished writing the blog for last week today. Good for me!

Wednesday, August 5th

Mom visited right after lunch. I made sure to have M feed me so she would not have to. Mom has gotten hooked on watching AGT (America‘s Got Talent), and I have started watching it as well. The acts are pretty great when they're good and legitimately heartwarming. Since I signed up for premium Peacock, I can watch the show without commercials, which really does save on time. So Mom and I watched the latest show together. Nice!

Thursday, August 6th

Dr R and Freddie would be back next week, but for now I would have to survive without them. I finally talked to the nurse about getting rid of the beets the kitchen insists on giving me. Occasionally, I eat one slice, but mostly I just throw them away. They will give me canned fruit instead. At least I will eat that.

I had talked to the hospital about throwing my 60th birthday in the backyard area on the first floor. Mom had been discussing logistics with the recreational director here, and he had mentioned that there were no bathrooms available on the first floor. The guests would need to go up to my floor to use the bathroom. It's like they never planned for that area to be used for any length of time by anyone other than the residents. So I needed to find a new venue for my party.

I immediately called the church I was connected with. Saturday was not available, but Friday was, so I reserved it. Then I texted my step-cousin, the professional slack key guitarist who has entertained at my 40th and 50th parties. My mom had been getting nervous that he wouldn't be able to play, so I was seeing if he could. I finally reached him, and we worked out to start the party a little earlier so he could play and then go on to his prior engagement. Perfect!

Friday, August 7th

I decided to keep watching Peacock and spent the whole day watching every episode of Five Star Weekend. I enjoyed that more than I thought I would. I do like Jennifer Garner, and I had not realized that Chloe Sevigny was in it. Not bad!

Saturday, August 8th

My sister was going to stop by at lunchtime, but she got delayed, so she did end up coming later. I ate a much smaller lunch than I would have because I thought she was bringing food soon. Luckily, I often have a hearty breakfast, so I was fine until she showed up at dinner time. We ended up watching two episodes of Cape Fear and not doing much else.

She brought the usual two sushi rolls and now also two salads, one kale and one coleslaw. I could eat those over the next three days and add some salad back into my meals. I bring in good food for myself!

After my sister left, I discovered that I had not realized that I had been lying flat the whole day and my body was now very heavy. It felt like lead. Usually, I have my legs raised, which I have done for probably over 10 years now since my feet started swelling. I raised my feet as much as I could bear and looked forward to tomorrow morning.

Sunday, August 9th

Mom didn't show up today, which did not surprise me, as she had said my sister and M would be working on her condo all day today. My mom is an artist, and one medium she loves is paper. She had learned a technique using Japanese paper, and she had decorated her walls with squares of paper that had been attached with a natural glue. The paper was strong enough so that she could wet the squares and remove them from the wall. Now that the work on her condo had been done, she made more glue and simply reattached the squares! Moveable wallpaper! Very cool!

I had to get up in my chair for a reason you will find out next week, so when I got back to my room, I asked my CNA to take a picture of my face for the blog. It actually came out pretty good! Better than I thought it would, which gives you an idea of how I think I look. Really, I just don't like the way my hair acts now. I am still coming to terms with looking older. Welcome to life! Grow up! Everyone who is reading this should have a fabulous week!
