“Donnie Brasco” - 10/26-11/1/26

Monday, October 26th

I am determined to catch up, so I'm not writing about two weeks ago. I'm going to make this week quick. Mom has a thing right now about watching Al Pacino, and I frankly couldn't be more bored. This seems like the last one for a while, so good! This is your basic true story of an informant in the Mob who had a lot of hard times with bad people. This 1997 film directed by Mike Newell stars Al Pacino and Johnny Depp along with a bunch of tough guys. Michael Madsen is particularly vicious. Blah. I'm glad Mom enjoyed it.

Tuesday, October 27th

I spent most of the morning doing a 400-piece puzzle. After lunch, I watched the first half of the new Luc Besson Dracula movie, and then D1 gave me a massage. After that, I finished the movie, which I liked! He put a new spin on a very old story and made Dracula sympathetic and almost romantic. And after that, I finished the puzzle! Very satisfying!

Wednesday, October 28th

The last couple of days I've been very lazy, so I just watched movies or TV shows all day.

Thursday, October 29th

Today was the day of my first OB/GYN appointment in at least 6 years. My last appointment had been at a women's clinic on Maui that had since closed its doors before I left the island. I knew it was something I should do, but I was certainly not looking forward to getting a pelvic exam. Because I have such a nice, flexible wheelchair, we would do the exam in it. My sister accompanied me so she could assist with whatever positioning had to be done.

We got in the room, and a young man came in to talk to me before the doctor came in. Fine. (As you have no doubt surmised, we are getting into TMI territory, so proceed at your own risk.) The doctor then came in and gave me a breast exam. Because I am at the point where I can‘t physically get into position for a mammogram with the standard horizontal screening table, manual breast exams are more important than ever. Too bad I never did them.

Everything felt fine, so we proceeded to the pelvic exam. For this, we made the wheelchair flat and moved my butt down so it was on the edge of the seat. My sister grabbed my right leg, and the young male assistant grabbed my left leg so they could lift my hips and the doctor could examine me. Every woman who has been to the gynecologist knows how wonderfully invasive the exam is, so you can just imagine how much better it is with two extra people there!

And then I learned how atrophied my lady bits had become when she asked for a pediatric speculum! Yikes! She was trying to get a sample from my cervix at the end of my vagina, but the speculum and the exam Q-tip were too short to reach, so she had to put a finger inside me. That was the really not-fun part, as she had to scrape her finger against me to try to get a sample. I felt that, and believe me, it did not feel good!

The hard part was over, and they got me seated in my chair again. I was not sitting on my sling properly anymore, and I did not relish the idea of transferring back to my bed. I also did not think I had been missing anything by not getting this done every year. I did enjoy meeting my taxi driver, who was the brother of someone who worked on my floor! Fabulous! I immediately invited both of them to my birthday party.

Friday, October 30th

Since yesterday took five long paragraphs to describe and nothing happened today apart from watching movies and shows, I will keep today nice and short!

Saturday, October 31st

My sister visited, and we discussed the coaching I wanted to do with the Russian lady. Over the course of that discussion, my sister admitted I had a lot of money in the bank, and she was going to make sure I spent it wisely. She thought I could go to any therapist, and what made this lady so special? I had to go to her and spend so much? As I am writing this, I realize that she could get things done in a year that other people would take far longer to get done. We made a plan to talk to her in two weeks. Great!

Sunday, November 1st

Mom stopped by after church and gave me lunch. My sister had gotten me two sushi rolls as usual, but the second sushi was avocado with cucumber instead of carrot. It was good, but I am going to stick with the carrot! I suggested we watch The Vanishing, which Criterion had in the original French version. It was a little slow for Mom, but I enjoyed it. I also got an entire week of blogging done and got halfway through the next week. I am determined to get completely caught up!

The cover photo this week is me with a recent meal ticket. The entrée is described as “CUBED SPECIAL ENTREE." What?! That tells me nothing. I guess “PLAIN BEEF” was too descriptive? Whatever. I get food.

Have a fabulous week!
