M’s apartment was having worked done that he had to supervise so it was just Mom and me today. This was an HBO show that I had watched and really liked and wanted to share with mom. There are six episodes but we just watched two for time. Mom liked the show or she would not have sat through the second episode. The show is really well done and I highly recommend it if you have access to HBO.
Tuesday, July 1st
I remembered my masseuse had said that she would be coming on Thursday instead of Tuesday this week, so I knew I had the whole day to myself. I had been listening to all the talk about the Big Beautiful Bill that was probably going to pass and I really wanted to take a look at it myself, so I spent the entire day skimming it. I got a copy of the text which anyone can see and read every heading. If I wanted to, I would part or all of the section it was referring to.
I was especially interested in the Medicaid portion. It was definitely a learning experience. There were about three or four pages where it was just sentence after sentence of giving one of the branches of the military hundreds of millions or billions of dollars to do whatever without any conditions. (My favorite part was where they said here's how many hundreds of millions of dollars to ‘prevent the retirement of this aircraft or whatever’. Yikes.) You see that and then a while later there are pages and pages of conditions and regulations for Medicaid for the thousands of dollars that someone will get. Good thing there's no fraud, waste or abuse in the military.
The good thing(?) is I personally do not have to be worried about my Medicaid. The percentage of people who depend solely on Medicaid and need 24 hour care is small enough that it is not a big money maker to slash my care, so it will stay in place. They did cancel the minimum staffing requirements for long-term care facilities that was about to go into place. I guess we don't know how good we have it now.

It's really depressing to have read all of that yesterday. And then to think of the Senate passing it. Too bad no one has enough backbone to stand up for what's right. It really seems like this administration is actively working to bankrupt the government. First, they got rid of a lot of people who made the government run and then they passed a bunch of new spending and tax cuts. It's only a matter of time before the administrative state breaks.
Thursday, July 3rd
Dr R and Freddie came, and we spent the whole session bemoaning the state of our politics and our democracy. I know I'm supposed to write an essay since it's the beginning of the month, but I just don't care right now. I am deep in the throes of negativity and I have no intention of spreading that around.
Friday, July 4th
I've said it before and I will say it one more time now. Now that the days are indistinguishable for me, major holidays are much more of a pain in my butt than anything else. What was true when I was living on my own is still true in an institution. It's hard to get people to come in when they would rather be celebrating the holiday at home. I'm glad for double overtime on major holidays as that is a legitimate draw for people. I planned for Mom to give me lunch, but the real problem is the evening. Oh well, you get through it and then it's the next day and there's new people working.
Saturday, July 5th
My sister came by for a shorter visit, but she still got some good sushi for me. I had a list of a few things to do which she got done quickly. Then we wrote an ad for someone to help me with hand exercises. Of course, I thought I could do those on my own, and of course, I was not doing them. We submitted the ad to Care.com and moved on. After she was gone, I thought about my essay and about reading something for my high school reunion that was coming up at the end of the month.
Sunday, July 6th
I forgot I had sushi for breakfast mainly because I didn't have a great night’s sleep and ended up sleeping until just before breakfast. Then I had a shower, got dressed and up in my chair because I was going out to lunch with my family, M and his family. We were celebrating M's birthday at the same Japanese restaurant where we had celebrated my birthday. This time, though, we reserved a private room which was much better for my chair than squishing in the common dining room.
My sister and I split a huge serving of sashimi. I usually try to avoid raw fish, but I thought let's splurge while I'm at a restaurant. What I found out was that I really only like tuna raw and the rest I can do without. Next time I will get the tempura or the eel, like I did last time. When I got back to the hospital, I walked back into Sunday night with barely any staff. I ate dinner an hour and a half late. Then I settle down and was OK and got to bed fine.
For some reason, I have a block about taking pictures at a gathering, so I intended to have a picture of everyone at lunch, but it didn't happen. Instead, here's a picture of me in the t-shirt my mom and sister brought me from Paris. They bought me an XL, and because Europeans don't get the size of Americans or Hawaiians, it is an American Large. Have a fabulous week!
