“House of Wax” - 10/13-19/25

Monday, October 13th

We wanted to watch something scary in honor of Halloween. Mom suggested this movie, and I checked with HBO, and they had it! This was Vincent Price’s first leading role in 1953, and I thought the movie was surprisingly effective. Mom thought they did a good job with his makeup, and he did look creepy when his mask broke, revealing his damaged face. Overall, it was well done for 1953.

Before we started the movie, Mom added two weights to my wrist weights. I had been wearing them for a couple of weeks and had gotten to the point where I barely felt them. Great! That meant my arm was getting stronger. Four weights had equaled half a pound, and I felt ambitious, so I thought, let's jump another quarter pound. So now I have 3/4 of a pound on my wrist. Let's see how long it takes till I can graduate to a pound!

Since my sister had not been able to stop by yesterday, she dropped in around 4:30 PM to say hi. As we were visiting, she noticed that it was dark in my room and wanted to open the shade. Since it was late in the day and the sun wasn't bright, I said, “Sure! Go for it!" And she let the light in. It was a nice change of pace, and she left a little while later. Then it got dark and I went to sleep.

Tuesday, October 14th

I woke up to the shade in the same place it was last night. Of course, I woke up at 5:30 AM, so it was still dark out and I did not notice it was down until 7 AM when the sunlight came streaming in. I realized I had not been using my iPad, so I had not noticed the glare from the extra light coming in the window. I had to wait until my CNA came to give me breakfast to get the shade drawn. And that is why I don't have visitors raise the shade. I don't remember to have them lower it back down.

My sister called me near the end of the day because she wanted to tell me about her sentencing hearing. The government had been asking for a really long sentence, but her client had been doing really well, and she spent a lot of time drafting a petition for a short sentence. An enormous number of people showed up to support him at the hearing, and the judge ended up sentencing him to six months in prison! I almost started crying thinking about how happy and relieved her client was. Perfect! I had just the reaction she was looking for!

A friend from Maui, who I thought was mad at me texted a friendly message saying that the last guy I had dated wanted her to send me his phone number. Hmm. We hadn't dated as much as hung out and got to know each other in the biblical sense. Then he had ghosted me. It had been so long ago that I didn't have any ill will towards him anymore, so I called and we had a good conversation, and he apologized for dropping communication with me. He had been in a really bad situation, which he was now out of. I liked getting back in touch with him. I also sent a nice text to my friend, and she and I had a friendly text exchange. It's great to be able to add people back into my life!

Wednesday, October 15th

The doctor changed my catheter quickly and uneventfully for the second time! I think we've got a trend going! Yippee!

My mom stopped by to give me lunch, and after I was finished eating, my sister called to tell both of us about the interview she had. She was applying for a federal public defender position, and word had spread about her sentencing hearing, so that was good timing for her. In my completely unbiased opinion, I don't know why she wouldn't be hired, but it's not for me to say.

Thursday, October 16th

Dr. R had a family emergency, so no session or Freddie today. It was a quiet day where I just watched movies and things.

Friday, October 17th

My next essay will be about my father, as my sister is traveling back east and will be at his church for his memorial service. Being the older sibling, I have a stronger sense and memory of him when he was more his real self, so I want to write an essay about him and the good things I remember. It's kind of sad to think that he only had about 20 years or so of young adult/adult life before his mental illness became the majority of who he was.

Today was a day when my morning CNAs were people filling in from another floor who did not know my routine. That means I have to explain how to wash my face and get me dressed and feed me, and do everything. Luckily, this doesn't happen very often. It's kind of fun to meet other people, but you're hardly ever going to see them again. I did have a chance to teach them a little body mechanics, which I love to do. Other than that, it was a usual day of watching things and trying to write.

Saturday, October 18th

Mom and my sister both went to the local ‘No Kings’ rally, and I got some photos and a short video from my sister. They both said there were way more people than at the two previous NK rallies. I'm sure that is true across the country, as things are only getting worse and more authoritarian as time goes on. I can't wait to hear what the final count is.

My sister and my mom both took naps after the rally, as it was very hot and they were standing the entire time. Then my sister visited me, and I had her go to the nearby Whole Foods to get me some sushi for dinner and meals the next day. I thought I would try a regular California roll with crab instead of shrimp. Mistake! I like the shrimp much more than the crab. Well, now I know.

Sunday, October 19th

Mom stopped by after church, and we watched another episode of The Pitt on HBO. Mom sometimes complains about the lack of things to watch, and she doesn't have HBO, so I turned her on to the show. It took about three episodes before she really got into it, but now she is hooked. Great! So now, when she visits, watching an episode is a priority. I get to rewatch season one before season two comes out in January.

I tried to start writing the blog, but I didn't get very far. I did make notes every day, so the actual writing should go fairly quickly. Good for me!

The cover photo is my mom and my sister at the rally on Saturday. They are surrounded by flags from the event and wearing the necessary headgear to protect themselves from the sun. At the end of the blog, I have included a photo my sister took of someone using a power chair at the rally. Consider that a stand-in for me, as I would have loved to have been there. There's also a video of the crowd. In previous NK rallies, people were only on one side of the street. Have a fabulous week!
